November clean up party

Thank you all for joining us for the end of the season clean up and pot luck. It was absolutely wonderful to see everyone out there working together. The food was delicious! A special thank you to our maintenance crew and events committee who have been working hard to make this garden what it is. (click on the pictures to see them larger)

Saturday November 18th Work Party!

The deadline for clearning out and renewing your plots this year is November 30th.

There will be a work party on Sunday the 18th from 3:00 to 5:00 put the garden to bed until spring.  If your plot is not yet winter-ready, this is your chance to do your work in the company of a lot of nice people; in other words, your work will be fun if you come do it Sunday.  If you have finished with your own plot, come anyway, because there will be other work to do. Following the garden session, there will be a potluck at 5:30 in the church.  Bring your best cooking to that, and enjoy the last Saint Mary's Garden social event of the season

Another wonderful Harvest Party!

Our volunteers have been working hard all year. I want to thank everyone who has supported NBCHG in any way. Every little bit counts in growing this wonderful community. Thank you!

Here are some pictures from this weekends Harvest Party. Click here to see more pictures.

Here are some tips and comments that we collected at the party from various members:
  • Plant brussels sprouts early [and someone added:  take off the top of brussels sprouts plants to force them to bush out]
  • I can plant indoors in my apartment!!
  • Today I figured out, you're better off investing in indoor grow lighting instead of humidity control!
  • If you plant garlic in the fall, make sure to cover it with straw so it doesn't get frozen and thawed
  • Dry years - keep watering [and someone else added:  especially broccoli and cauliflower!]
  • Bugs like eating holes in the leaves - use organic homemade remedies
  • If you're growing potatoes make sure to mound the dirt around almost daily so they don't get sunburnt!  Once they do they are too bitter to eat!
  • Think outside the box!  It's not supposed to be rows!
  • Putting sulfur on blueberries increases growth and production

BIG Thank you to our wonderful maintenance crew and volunteers!

We saw a lot of plots out there that need some attention. Don't leave your garden to rot. If you cannot make it up to harvest or clear out your plot please contact Madeleine at nbchgardens@gmail.com or 506-292-7646.

Our community border plot has some swiss chard that can be picked and if you like beet greens there's plenty! Look for plots marked "community," they are there for anyone to harvest from.

Garlic

Now is the time to plant garlic! Grab some bulbs from the market and plant the cloves about an inch deep, 4 -6 inches apart. Mulch well with leaves and straw and then wait. The garlic will emerge in the spring and will be ready to harvest in the summer. Enjoy the curly garlic scapes and then make sure to save some garlic for seed and next years supply.
